General DACA Information
On September 5th, 2017 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a program that offered nearly 800,000 Dreamers protection from deportation and the ability to work lawfully in the United States, was rescinded. Since then, several lawsuits have been filed, leading to three nationwide injunctions. For now, people who currently have or previously had DACA are allowed to continue applying to renew their deferred action status. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide by June 2020 if DACA will continue.
We need volunteers!
On Saturday, October 19th, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic is hosting a DACA Renewal Clinic Day at St. Monica Catholic Church, in partnership with the Nicholas H. Noyes Jr. Memorial Foundation. During this Clinic Day, we will assist eligible recipients in renewing their DACA status, help participants explore other possible immigration relief eligibility, and inform participants of the legal rights they have regardless of immigration status. We will need the help of Volunteer Attorneys, Law Student Volunteers, and General Volunteers. Light breakfast foods and lunch will be provided for all volunteers, who are asked to check in at 8:45 AM and may leave around 12:30 PM.
Volunteer Attorneys
At 9 AM, a DACA Renewal training presentation for 1 CLE credit will begin for volunteer attorneys. Attorneys will begin meeting with clients at 10:15 AM in designated areas. Volunteer attorneys will each meet with two clients individually, over the course of two hours, to complete the DACA Renewal applications. Upon completion, Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic staff will review and sign the applications with the clients. Lunch will be available for volunteers only, beginning at 12:15 PM.
Law Student Volunteers
Law student volunteers may perform the same task as a volunteer attorney or a general volunteer, depending on area of interest, year in law school, and level of experience. Volunteer law students will attend the 9 AM training related to their assignment for the day and then begin serving after their training session concludes. Lunch will be available for volunteers only, beginning at 12:15 PM.
General Volunteers
At 9 AM, during the attorney training, there will be a non-attorney volunteer training on general event tasks such as client registration, application printing, and helping with way-finding. Clients will begin to arrive at 9:45 AM in the registration/waiting area and will meet with volunteer attorneys beginning at 10:15 AM. Lunch will be available for volunteers only, beginning at 12:15 PM.
