Immigrant & Survivor
Justice Program
We assist with a wide variety of family-based and humanitarian immigration needs.
Our Immigration team assists with various family-based and humanitarian immigration needs, such as removal defense, asylum, U Visas, residency/green card applications, family-based petitions, temporary protected status, citizenship, and DACA Renewal. We also refer immigrants with legal issues not connected to their immigration status, like landlord/tenant issues, tax issues, and more.
Out of State? For free or low-cost immigration legal assistance outside Indiana, you may check the National Immigration Legal Services Directory, from Immigration Advocates Network.
Do you have questions about changes that the incoming Trump administration may bring concerning immigration? Visit the links below for more information from our friends at the National Immigrant Justice Center on possible changes and frequently asked questions from many community members right now (i.e., how do I protect my family in the event of possible deportation? What does “mass deportations” actually mean?). If you have specific questions or need an in-person consultation, please make an appointment for a Consult With A Lawyer session where you can speak with an immigration attorney about your case.
Unauthorized Practice of Law
Has someone promised to get you a work permit if you pay them just a few hundred dollars? Or a green card? A full asylum application for $500? While these offers may sound enticing, they may also be illegal and a scam.
In the United States generally and here in Indiana specifically, only licensed attorneys may give legal advice. This includes determining what immigration benefits you are eligible for and giving advice on what kind of information should and shouldn’t be included on an immigration form.
While many people do these things out of a sincere desire to help others, some are only trying to make money for themselves. These scammers, who often advertise themselves as being a “notary” (notario) or “notary public” (notario público), can cause real damage to you and your immigration case. The applications they write and file are of very low quality and will require finding an attorney to correct, taking up even more of your time and money. Sometimes, the work these scammers produce in your name can hurt your eligibility for work authorization, a green card, or even a path to citizenship.
Whether done by a person who wants to help or someone trying to scam you out of your money, offering legal advice without being an attorney is illegal. Watch out for offers that are too good to be true, especially from people who are not attorneys, but claim they can help you with your immigration case.
