Memorial Day Spotlight: Helping Veterans in Need
On this Memorial Day we remember those who have served our country and paid the ultimate price for our freedom and security.
All of our brave veterans are heroes. Unfortunately some of them return home and face both financial and legal hardship.
The Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic is proud to partner with an organization called Helping Veterans and Families (HVAF). HVAF refers veterans directly to the Clinic for help with a variety of legal needs.
“Since starting this work I have gotten 12 evictions sealed for clients who are veterans, enabling them all to be eligible for more housing options,” said Angela Hale, a staff attorney at the Clinic who works directly with our veteran clients.
“Several of our veteran clients have needed criminal records expunged, some for one-time mistakes that happened a long time ago but have haunted them ever since,” continued Hale. “I remember one client was so excited to finally be eligible to join a professional organization that he had been unable to join previously.”
Hale was also able to get a lease canceled for another veteran because the property wasn’t livable. When the veteran’s family went to move in, there was no furnace, hot water heater, cabinets, refrigerator, or stove.
“It feels good to serve those who have already served us,” said Hale. “We are grateful for our veterans and glad to be able to show our gratitude in a tangible way here at the Clinic.”
Thank you to all who have served in our military!
And thank you to all who help sustain our work at the Clinic so we can continue to serve our veterans. May God bless America!
