ICYMI: July 2019

In case you missed it, this July, we highlighted our Immigrant Justice Program, sharing our hearts for our immigrant neighbors, focusing on compelling client stories, and clarifying the historical context for immigration in this country.

On the blog, we kicked things off with a message from our Director of Immigrant Services Rachel Van Tyle. In honor of Independence Day on July 4, we shared three stories of clients receiving their U.S. citizenship. We then met Volunteer Attorney Jack Moriarty and we learned about the work that Immigrant Outreach Attorney Laura Pontius is doing in northeast Indiana, thanks to a grant from the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation. And, finally, we highlighted our new Modest Means Program, which allows us to provide low-cost legal services to clients who do not qualify for our pro bono services.

On social media, we shared various client stories, including one about Marla, a single mother who unexpectedly had her hours cut, and another about a young girl named Amina who came to the United States as refugee. We also met Rodrigo, a 17-year-old immigrant who came to this country on his own when he was only 14.

Our friends at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church featured us in their July newsletter, The Chimes. And as a thank you for the amazing and generous response we received for our June campaign, we released a video from Executive Director Chris Purnell:

And with all the recent changes to immigration, we are encouraging those with potential asylum claims to come speak to us or another immigration attorney:

Check back with us this August when we feature our Victim Justice Program, exploring the hardships faced by many of our clients and the provisions in place to help them achieve safety and stability.
