Meet Our Summer 2019 Interns!

Kanfing Camara

Kanfing Camara worked with Director of Immigrant Services Rachel Van Tyle in the Immigrant Justice Program (IJP) during her internship. She helped the IJP staff by filling out various immigration applications and completing other administrative work. Of her experience, she says, “I learned a lot about different immigration applications, and which forms handle what sort of issues, from getting a work visa to obtaining a green card. I became more aware of the actual work that immigration lawyers do, and how to be personable to clients.” Her favorite part was hearing the stories of the clients, where they came from, and why they came to the United States. She says, “I really liked seeing how they lit up when they were told that their case would be picked up by the Clinic.” This fall, Kanfing is heading into her last year of undergrad at Purdue University.

Kathleen Meyer

Kathleen Meyer worked with Expungement Help Desk Manager Julie Mennel in the City-County Building over the summer. During her internship, she says, “There was a lot of legal jargon that I had trouble understanding, but now it's like a second language.” Her favorite memory from working at the Expungement Help Desk is assisting a couple that lives in the same town where her family’s lake cottage is. “It's a small place sort of on the eastern border of Kentucky and Tennessee so it was random that they needed help in Indiana and I was the one to help them,” she says. “We were able to bond over the beauty of Dale Hollow Lake and how cool it is that we all knew the area so well.” This fall, Kathleen will be starting her sophomore year at the University of Notre Dame where she’s pursuing a Political Science and Spanish double major. She also writes for The Observer—Notre Dame's student-run newspaper—and dances for the Irish Dance Club. She is hoping to add Mock Trial to her list of extracurriculars this upcoming school year.

Rack Hyuck (Ray) Chung

Rack Hyuck (Ray) Chung worked with Staff Attorney Chase Haller on housing cases this summer. He says, “I spent most of my time researching various legal authorities to prove the risks associated with land-contracts and rent-to-buy contracts.” This work helped him to learn a lot about the impact of law on society. “Assisting Chase with recent developments in the Casas Baratas case taught me how justice can be fought through the legal system.” In addition to this rewarding work, Ray also loved the chance to get to know his fellow interns over the summer and he appreciated that the Legal Clinic has a dedicated prayer room. Now that his internship is over, Ray will be moving to Washington D.C. to attend George Washington University this fall.

Adam Warner

Adam Warner worked with our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic for his internship, helping out with a variety of tax controversy cases. This included obtaining information for Offers-in-Compromise, preparing income tax returns, and more. Adam also had the chance to watch webinars from certified CPAs covering various topics involving taxation and accounting. Of his time at the Clinic, Adam says, “I have learned more than I could have imagined about the IRS, tax law, tax controversies, and more. It has helped establish foundational knowledge of a topic I will surely interact with in the future, especially if I become a CPA.” His favorite memory from his internship was attending a refugee center with Enrolled Agent Jim Floyd to help teach basic tax knowledge to those residing there. Now, Adam will return to Indiana University to begin his sophomore year of college.

Emily Boomershine

Emily Boomershine worked with the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic this summer, helping Enrolled Agent Jim Floyd complete Offers-in-Compromise for clients struggling to pay off debts. She also helped complete multiple Forms 1040 to help clients pay individual income taxes. Emily says of her internship, “I have learned a lot more about the so-called sharing economy, like a client who has a job through Uber. I also learned how to use TaxWise software.” Her favorite memory is when two middle-aged clients brought their grandson into the Clinic. After consulting with the clients, she got the chance to play with the little boy. This fall, Emily will return to the University of Indianapolis to finish her five-year degree. Then, she will take the CPA Exam and keep studying to become a successful accountant.
