General DACA Information
On September 5th, 2017 DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a program that offered nearly 800,000 Dreamers protection from deportation and the ability to work lawfully in the United States, was rescinded. Several lawsuits were later filed, leading to three nationwide injunctions. The U.S. Supreme Court decided in June of 2020 that DACA is able to continue for now, but future attempts to terminate the program are expected. The Clinic is trying to help DACA recipients renew their applications now so they can have at least another two years of relative security in this country--for many, the only country that they know.
We need volunteers!
Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic is hosting a virtual DACA Renewal Clinic Day on Friday, July 17th, from 9 AM to 1:30 PM. The morning will begin with a virtual training on Zoom. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer CLE credit this time. Then, from about 10:20 to 11:20 AM and 12:00 to 1:00 PM, each volunteer attorney or approved law student will meet with clients virtually (ideally via video call) to complete the necessary applications for their DACA renewal. These applications will be reviewed by Clinic immigration attorneys, and clients will file them pro se.
Important Technological Considerations
To maintain the security of client information, volunteers will need to use a Clinic-owned laptop for this event. During each of the volunteer's two client meetings, the volunteer will video call the client using his/her personal device and will electronically fill out the DACA renewal PDF forms on the Clinic laptop. To facilitate the lending of the Clinic laptops, we humbly request that you please pick up your laptop from our office (at 33rd and Meridian) the day before the event, July 16th, between 3:00 and 4:30 PM, if at all possible. If this time does not work for you, we will try to arrange for one of our staff members to drop off the laptop at your residence. All of the laptops will then need to be returned to our office between 3:00 and 4:30 PM on July 17th. Thank you very much!
This event is brought to you in partnership with the Nicholas H. Noyes Jr. Memorial Foundation.
